Portfolio Building

Over the past two months or so I have been working on building my portfolio; to build my portfolio I have used both coursework from college and personal work of my own.
The first six pages of my portfolio were pieces taken from a project I produced focused on 'A World of Colour'. My final outcome for this project was a digitally rendered educational book about colour.

Layout thumbnails that were produced for the educational book.

First chapter of the educational book; 'Colour Theory'.

Second chapter of the educational book; 'Colour Symbolism'.

Third chapter of the educational book; 'Colour in Art & Design'.

Fourth and final chapter of the educational book; 'Colour Techniques'.

Postcard sized studies of colour symbolism, created for the
first part of the colour project.

This next page of my portfolio shows two images of samples from the project I am currently working on: 'The City Project'. For this project I have to produce a range of handmade 3D typography.

The first sample was shadow typography, which was produced
by partially cutting the letters out from white card
and then shining a light on the card from above.
The second sample was produced by folding each page of a
book to eventually take the shape of a letter.

The next two pages of my portfolio shows three stages of a personal illustration I produced last summer. The idea for this illustration came from researching about the Tree of Life. I made the decision of placing this piece in my portfolio due to the precision of each line and how well the final outcome was.

The first image shows the first step, which was the basic
outline using fine liner. The second image showing the next step,
which was painting the inside using acrylic paint.

This image shows the final outcome, completely painted.

The next four pages of my portfolio were etching and lino prints from when I was experimenting with printmaking in the first year of my college course.

Etching print using black ink, inspiration taken from a hands.

Etching print using black ink, inspiration taken from a portrait
I had done previously.

Linoleum print using green ink, inspiration taken from primary
studies for a mechanical project.

studies for a mechanical project.

The next two pages of my portfolio show my development from design sheets to a final outcome for a textiles project from my first year of college.

Two developmental design sheets, inspiration for these design was
taken from primary research for a natural frameworks project.

The final outcome that was produced from the design sheets,
using silk screen printing, bond-a-web, and hand stitch.

The next two pages are two personal pieces of hand rendered typography. The reason I produced these pieces was to remind me of what I love and to give me a break from the digital side of graphic design.

Hand rendered piece of typography, produced on A5 brown paper
using pencil and black fine liner. The 'E' being the first
letter of my name.

Hand rendered piece of typography, produced in the style of
pointillism on A5 white card, using pencil and various sized
black fine liner.

The last three pages of my portfolio a few studies taken from life classes over the past two years at college. In life class I have experimented with a range of media, influenced by various artists. Although these studies are unfinished, I placed them in my portfolio to show my skill with time and precision.

Proportional life study, created using pencil on cartridge paper.

Proportional life study, produced using black ink and a
water wash with paintbrush.

Works of The Human body

I love to sketch the human figure, in particular I like to sketch portraits.
To achieve the tonal range that I have in this portrait, I used a single HB pencil and an eraser.

Another one of my portraits, this time drawn using ball point pen.
This portrait is a favourite of mine, I think this is because I wasn't expecting it to turn out so well, due to it being my first pen portrait. If I was to change anything I wouldn't have made the shading so dark.

This was a portrait I sketched for a college project. When producing this portrait I tried to be as proportionally correct as I could by creating guidelines; I feel this worked in my favour.

At the time of me producing this piece I had took an interest in sketching the facial features. When producing this piece I had given myself a time period of 15 minutes in which to complete it. My favourite aspect of it is the tonal range I was able to create using a HB pencil.

When producing this piece I wanted to experiment a little with the shading, so i had a try at crosshatch. I am quite pleased with the outcome.

To produce this sketch of lips I worked from my own using a mirror, including as much detail as I could. An eraser was used to mark where the light hit my lips.

Again for this sketch I tried using crosshatch for the shading. I think the crosshatch gave off a great effect.

This study was produced for a college project based on the figure. I gave myself a set time period if 10 minutes in which to sketch this study. With the time period I had given I feel the study is at a great standard.

Another study that I produced for the college project based on the figure. I feel that this study would have been better if I had given myself more time in which to complete it.
